Proofpoint Threat Research (1 October 2026) publicly debuts TA419, a China-aligned espionage actor running credential phishing against US and Japan think tanks, defence contractors, universities and law firms since at least April 2025. July 2026 wave (from 8 Jul) impersonated Lynne Edwards Parker (former White House OSTP Principal Deputy Director) and economist Heidi Crebo-Rediker with benign “AI Policy Advisory Committee” / Senate Foreign Relations AI export-control report lures, then shortened links into Cloudflare Turnstile → Frameless BitB AitM against Microsoft 365 / Entra ID (OfficeHome client_id) capturing password, MFA and session cookies. February 2026: same actor impersonated a senior Anthropic employee (“Request for Feedback on Military Integration of Claude”) against a US think-tank AI policy analyst. Domains include driftshare[.]co → globalfileshareplatform[.]com (July) plus file-share themed infra; NameSilo + Cloudflare CDN; VPS TLS fingerprint O=Castro Inc. Assessed collection on US AI policy/regulatory landscape amid US–China competition. No product CVE. Primary: Proofpoint; wires: CyberScoop / Infosecurity / Nextgov 1 Oct. UPDATE (Reuters via iTnews, 2 Oct): Proofpoint says the July targeting involved fewer than 10 people at a handful of organisations, suggesting intelligence interest in US policymaking rather than technology theft alone; Reuters identified one recipient, former White House official Alex Engler, who received a fake invitation from “Parker” to join an AI policy project, and Parker said she knew of two such messages sent in her name in early July.

Wordfence CNA CVE-2026-1581 (published 19 Feb 2026; CVSS 3.1 7.5 High AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N): unauthenticated time-based SQL injection in the WordPress wpForo Forum plugin via the ‘wpfob’ parameter in all versions up to and including 2.4.14 (insufficient escaping/preparation on SQL). Vendor changelog: 2.4.15 (10 Feb 2026) lists “Security: Vulnerability - Unauthenticated Time-Based SQL Injection” (current trunk Stable tag 3.2.2). UPDATE 1 Oct 2026: The Hacker News (bundled with SC backdoor coverage) cites Previdian telemetry — fewer than 20 exploitation attempts since 3 July 2026 from five unique IPs (Bulgaria, Switzerland, France, US, Yemen). Primary: Wordfence/MITRE CVE record + wpForo changelog; wire: THN 1 Oct.
The Hacker News (1 October 2026) amplifies Sucuri research on a WordPress malware family codenamed SC (from “SC_” markers) described as a blockchain-controlled “self-healing mesh.” Identical backdoor payload is planted in at least eight places — including wp-content/db.php drop-in, a theme-resident twin (e.g. khorshidi/functions.php), fake plugin hyper-engine-kit (and a second copy), database storage, and System V shared-memory segments with a fixed numeric key — so deleting any one copy lets another rewrite the set on next page load or via cron. Code uses a substitution-cipher decoder (no readable function names). Capabilities: hide from plugins screen/update checks; C2 via Ethereum blockchain; fingerprint site; fetch arbitrary JavaScript (skimmers/malware); run PHP; deactivate/delete plugins. Shared-memory copy can survive disk+DB cleanup and on shared hosting may be owned by another account. Initial access vector not confirmed (typical WP plugin/theme flaws, weak creds, supply chain). Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report (MDDR; aka.ms/MDDR2026; BleepingComputer amplify 1 October 2026) argues cyber attackers are currently benefiting from AI faster than defenders: AI is compressing time/expertise/cost for vulnerability discovery, customised malware generation, and post-compromise work (exfiltration, secret discovery) while remediation lags. Microsoft expects attacker–defender equilibrium to re-establish eventually, but near-term “attackers are reaching to advantages first.” Report warns of a multi-year period where known-but-unpatched vulnerability counts spike, and well-funded adversaries may stockpile AI-discovered zero-days; median time from in-the-wild discovery to weaponisation has fallen “well below 24 hours.” Separate takeaway: attackers already treat AI systems as another attack surface. OpenAI (1 October 2026 post; The Hacker News same day) reports disrupting a coordinated adversarial-distillation campaign that systematically extracted protected (encrypted) reasoning traces to help train or reproduce another model. Activity began 1 July 2026; high-volume spikes 24–25 July (~16,000 extraction-pattern requests from 4,000+ users); related prompt patterns across a cluster of 15,000+ users; fully disrupted by 28 July. OpenAI attributes a core cluster to individuals associated with Moonshot AI (Kimi). Operators copied encrypted reasoning between conversations and prompted weaker/sibling models to decrypt/transcribe hidden reasoning without jailbreaking the stronger model. Mitigations: account enforcement; closed a pathway that allowed replay of another user's encrypted reasoning; added checks to detect/hold streamed output that might expose reasoning; shared technique details via Frontier Model Forum. OpenAI frames adversarial distillation as an industry-wide safety/national-security risk (capability transfer without safety investment). UPDATE 1–2 Oct 2026 (desk): BleepingComputer (1 Oct) and SecurityWeek amplify Europol on Operation KillSwitch (German-led; action 30 Sep 2026) against KillSec ransomware. Seized dark-web leak site and servers; at least 110TB of stolen victim data taken offline; domains show Hamburg State Criminal Police / international LE seizure banner. Three suspects provisionally arrested and eight properties searched in Greece, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom. Partners include Belgium, United States, Finland, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, UK, plus Europol, Eurojust, Bitdefender and Group-IB. Europol: ~1,000 suspected attacks worldwide since ~2024; investigators so far count ~500 successful attacks (about 70 linked to German orgs, including 18 Hamburg cases); prior leak-site listing ~450 victims. Alleged main operator/administrator is 16; a suspected developer turned 18 in August 2026 (still a minor for some alleged offences); negotiator and affiliate also identified. Entry often via software flaws and weakly protected edge/cloud storage; extortion via leak site. No Australian victim named in these wires. Primary wires: BleepingComputer / SecurityWeek citing Europol (1 Oct); Europol press page not stably fetchable from desk at pass time.

CVE-2026-17106 (GHSA-hfg8-hc9c-6c3h; Docker/Moby; published mid-August 2026; dubbed CopyEscape): tar extraction in moby/go-archive (Unpack/UnpackLayer/Untar and ApplyLayer helpers) does not confine filesystem writes to the destination directory — lexical path checks can be defeated when archive entries introduce links the OS then follows. An attacker who controls a running container can race docker cp archive generation (directory → symlink TOCTOU) so the host-side CLI extracts attacker-chosen files outside the user-selected destination with the privileges of the docker cp process (including sudo docker cp → root on Linux; macOS Desktop extracts on the host even though containers run in a Linux VM). Imperva research (Ron Masas; Cyber Security News 1 Oct 2026) shows the chain replacing host binaries such as runc so a later Docker runtime invoke runs attacker code as root; also affects Docker Sandboxes sbx cp for AI-agent workflows pulling files from untrusted sandboxes. CVSS 4.0 7.1 HIGH (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A/…). Fixed: moby/go-archive 0.3.0; Docker Engine/CLI 29.7.0; Docker Desktop 4.86.0 (10 Aug 2026 notes: destination-escape in docker container cp); Docker Compose 5.4.0; Docker Sandboxes 0.38.0. Until patched: do not docker cp from untrusted/compromised containers; stop the container before copy; avoid sudo docker cp in CI. Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) report “Vulnerability Discovery and Exploitation Trends in the AI Era” (published 1 October 2026; SecurityWeek amplify 30 Sep ahead of/with release) analyses Jan 2025–Aug 2026 disclosure and exploitation telemetry. Monthly CVE disclosures roughly doubled in 2026 (e.g. ~5,045 in January → ~10,477 in July, peak ~10,740 in August); GTIG cautions open-source CNA inflation (Linux kernel description alone ~5,000 CVEs Jan–Aug with zero observed in-the-wild zero-days). GTIG high-risk disclosures grew 167% (131 in Jan → 350 in Aug). Distinct exploited vulnerabilities: 141 in first eight months of 2026 vs 127 in all of 2025 (~18/month vs ~10.5). Only ~0.23% of 2026 disclosures observed exploited. Zero-day exploitation rose modestly (~8/month 2025 → ~11/month 2026; 22 in August); 62% of exploited vulns Jan–Aug were zero-days — growth also from faster n-day weaponisation (GTIG hypothesises LLM-assisted patch/diff analysis). AI-discovered vulns show different risk profile (more medium/high vs non-AI) and ~50% lead to remote code execution vs ~26% non-AI. Confirmed in-the-wild exploitation of some AI-discovered vulnerabilities described as an early indicator. Primary: Google Cloud / GTIG blog 1 Oct; wire: SecurityWeek.
